HHMI programs

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), a nonprofit medical research organization, is one of the largest sources of funding for medical research in the United States, and has both research and science education programs worldwide.

In the late 1980's, HHMI initiated a program of grant opportunities designed to improve the quality of science education, to encourage students to pursue careers in the sciences, and to improve access to science education for all students.   Haverford College is honored to have received a series of generous grants from HHMI, providing continuous support for undergraduate science programs since 1988.

Interdisciplinary Scholars Program.

Scholars funded by this program commit themselves to a curriculum, which, while grounded in the experimental sciences and mathematics, explores interdisciplinary science and math outside of the major. HHMI Interdisciplinary Scholars participate in research at Haverford over the summer, and present their results at the intercollegiate Undergraduate Science Research Symposium in the fall. Rising sophomores, juniors and seniors may apply for this program.

Multicultural Scholars Program.

Funds support summer research stipends for Haverford students, international students, and students performing research while on Study Abroad. These Scholars also present their results at the intercollegiate Undergraduate Science Research Symposium in the fall. Beginning in 2009, we will designate two positions per year for international students and provide funding for two students to pursue research efforts abroad.

Teaching Post-Doctoral Fellows.

The postdoctoral fellowship program provides opportunities for postdoctoral research fellows to teach in the engaged, research-active liberal arts atmosphere at Haverford. Departments may request part-time support for a teaching postdoctoral fellow. In conjunction with Bryn Mawr College, we will host a symposium for are post-docs providing information about the teaching and research environment of liberal arts colleges. We will also collaborate with other liberal arts colleges to recruit post-docs from groups underrepresented in the sciences to the liberal arts college environment.

Curriculum and Laboratory Development.

Funds support Departmental and inter-Departmental initiatives, such as our current efforts in curriculum and laboratory development in Scientific Computing and in interdisciplinary areas involving math. Course release is available for participating faculty members. Funds are also available for faculty to attend pedagogical seminars at other institutions and for guest lecturers to speak in current Haverford courses. Equipment purchases include new computing hardware for Chemistry lab courses and a shared scientific computing facility.
