HHMI Programs

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), a nonprofit medical research organization, is one of the largest sources of funding for medical research in the United States, and has both research and science education programs worldwide. Haverford College is honored to have received a series of generous grants from HHMI, providing continuous support for undergraduate science programs since 1988. HHMI support for interdisciplinary science has had a significant impact on education at Haverford, such as allowing us to establish a Concentration in Biochemistry and Biophysics. Funds from this grant support faculty and curriculum development, research opportunities for science majors, and a variety of outreach programs.

Beckman Scholars Program

The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation has awarded Haverford College a grant to designate and fund three or four students as "Beckman Scholars" over the next two or three summers and academic years. The Beckman Scholars Program was established in 1998 and is a prestigious national scholarship offered at roughly 35 academically-rigorous colleges and universities to recognize exceptional students with an interest in the chemical and biological sciences. To date, ten outstanding Haverford College students have been designated as Beckman Scholars.

Mellon Environmental Studies

The Mellon Foundation has awarded a significant grant to Haverford College to develop an Environmental Studies program. This grant will help endow funds to support three new tenure-line positions in the Departments of Chemistry, Biology, and Anthropology. This faculty, along with other Haverford faculty with environmental interests, will work closely with Bryn Mawr College to create synergies with their existing environmental studies program.

Sherman-Fairchild Foundation

The Sherman-Fairchild Foundation has awarded Haverford College a grant to support undergraduate summer science research. The funds from this grant will support the cost of research stipends for ten students per year. The bulk of the stipends will support students interested in Physics and Astronomy research. Students interested in applying for this fund should talk to faculty in the Physics and Astronomy Department and then, having identified a potential mentor, apply for funding to the Associate Provost. Faculty may also contact the Associate Provost directly to inquire about funding opportunities for their students.
