The Mentoring And StudentTeaching program is a long-standing outreach program supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The program provides laboratory experience and writing tutorials for 40-50 Philadelphia area high school and middle school students who come from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in the sciences. Haverford College students prepare the course curricula, devise and teach the scientific labs, and work one-on-one with high school and middle school students as tutors. Haverford College faculty advisers for this program are Professors Robert Fairman, Maud McInerney and Kate Heston.

The outreach MAST Program is designed to give students the opportunity to experience first-hand the exciting world of college while improving their scientific observation, thinking and communication skills.

Haverford College students take pride in their participation in MAST and try hard to create an environment that is productive as well as fun.
Haverford College students serve as mentors and role models. They can answer questions about college life as well as science.
Haverford College students create a laboratory curriculum exploring a variety of fields, including chemistry, physics and biology.

In MAST, every high school and middle school student receives one-on-one support. As a result, each student has the opportunity to explore his or her own scientific interest.

Haverford Student quotes:
"I want to teach these particular kids because I'm from where they are now. I've got to show them what is possible."
"I love the kids and giving back to the community, because so many people did the same for me. I see an opportunity to help and to inspire."
"I want to give kids the chance to explore, to see for themselves how cool science can be!"
"I feel that both English and science are subjects that students don't always feel confident about, and I want to help them feel more confident about these subjects and themselves."
"I can relate to the students that have a hard time applying the lessons to their everyday life."
"I have experience with demanding professors and deadlines; I can give advice, encouragement, and I can demystify the craft of writing."
