submit a paper to the Haverford Journal?
A call for papers will go out via mass campus email.
Submissions can be of any length. Submissions could be, but are not limited
to, final papers or thesis chapters. There is a limit of one submission per
student. Please email all questions and papers to jouurnal@haverford.edu as

Student Humanities Seminar
A workshop for anyone interested in leading a Student Seminar will be held
in February, MCC (Stokes 102. Student Seminars are not-for-credit,
interdisciplinary classes designed and run by students, food and reading materials
supplied by the Humanities Center. Past topics have included same-sex marriage,
orphans, the poetry of polynomials, reality TV plastic surgery, and more.
Prof. Laura McGrane and former seminar leaders will go over past proposals
to help you massage your interests (Furbies, let's say) into a workable student
seminar (“The Limits of Language: a Hermeneutical Exploration of P(re)-recorded
Furby,” Vocabulary‰???). Brilliant idea not required for entry.

How
do I propose a Student Seminar?
Seminar Leader Proposal Guidelines:
Sophomores and Juniors are invited to submit a Seminar one-page proposal that
includes:
• Student name, email address, year, and major
• Proposed title for the seminar
• Name of faculty advisor
• One or two paragraphs describing the proposed area of investigation:
What questions do you hope to ask or answer? How might students from different
majors approach the topic? List any specific authors, theorists, or speakers
that you may wish to include.
How do I apply to participate in a Student Seminar?
Seminar Member Application Guidelines:
In cooperation with the seminar leader/s, the
Humanities Center will solicit applications for the selected seminar from
all graduating classes across the Haverford student body. Applications should
be a MS Word document which includes the following information:
• Student name, email address, year, and major
• A paragraph that explains your interest in the seminar, what perspectives
you hope to contribute, and what you hope to take from participating in it.
Application Deadlines:
for Seminar proposals, by 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 1; Seminars will be announced
on Monday, March 19; participant applications due Friday, April 20 by 5 p.m.;
participants announced on Monday, April 30.

do I apply for a Latin/Greek Language Studies grant?
Applications should consist of:
• An inventory of humanities courses taken to date;
• A brief statement explaining why you would like to study Latin or
Ancient Greek during the summer;
• The names of your faculty advisor and the Classics faculty member
with whom you consulted;
• The name and details of the program you wish to attend.

the capacity of the Center’s funding line for this program. Reading
groups must have a faculty advisor.

How do I apply
for a Research Stipend?
Awards are made on a rolling, ad hoc basis up
to the capacity of the Center’s funding line for this program. They
are usually given for senior projects, although others may be considered.
Applications must include a short summary of the proposed idea, its relation
to their current academic work, as well as a detailed budget. A faculty advisor
is also required.

How
do I apply for a Summer Humanities Internship?
The Humanities Center strives to find hosts who
can provide students with challenging experiences and make the best use of
their abilities to read, observe, analyze, and react with creativity and conviction.
Most of our hosts have worked with the Center before. The Philadelphia Art
Museum has a dedicated spot for a Haverford student for its annual Museum
Studies Internships.
This program is open to rising seniors only who have demonstrated strengths
and interests in humanistic disciplines. The Steering Committee will review
all applications and select a pool of candidates to be considered by the host
organizations.

The Center will announce the 2008 host organizations on January 31. Student
applications are due February 15; after the hosts review applications and
interview students, they will make their offers in mid-March.
