Dialogues on Art
“Dialogues” are interdisciplinary dinner
conversations that bring together students and faculty from a variety of disciplines
in order to discuss art. Participants visit exhibitions, performances, or
screenings of contemporary art in and around Philadelphia, and then discuss
them over dinner. Please contact James Weissinger, Post-Bac Fellow, (jweissin@haverford.edu)
with your suggestions.
Arts Exhibits, Performances and Residencies
The Center promotes artistic programming that navigates
the boundaries of forms and expression. In so doing, we hope to prompt self-conscious
reflection on the part of students and faculty about tradition, innovation,
and the roles of maker/performer and audience. Toward this end, Center staff
members work alongside faculty sponsors and curators, providing logistical,
professional, and technical support.
The Humanities Center funds arts events and residencies and also administers
the college exhibitions program for the Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery and the
Humanities Center's exhibition space, Stokes 102. The
exhibitions program offers new opportunities for faculty to connect visual
and material culture with the curriculum or in support of faculty research
interests.

Grant Application
Deadline for 2008-09 Events, Residencies and Exhibitions:
April 4, 2008
Proposals for events that require more advance planning are also welcome
for Spring 2009, the 2009-10 academic year, and beyond.
The Hurford Humanities Center’s annual
Performance/Arts Series is supported by a generous grant from The Leaves of
Grass Foundation. Funds from Leaves of Grass are intended support visits from
distinguished artists, filmmakers, public intellectuals, musicians, dancers,
and others, who not only offer significant presentations, but also lead small
groups of faculty and students, and even community members, in sustained reflection
on the meaning and significance of what they do. The Center Steering Committee
is particularly committed to employing Leaves of Grass resources for events
that challenge the campus community to fresh thinking about art and culture
In a typical year, the Leaves of Grass Program provides two artist residencies,
which may be arranged in cooperation with other departments, programs, and
centers whose interests echo and enhance the Center’s mission.
