The John B. Hurford ’60 Center for the Arts and Humanities (HCAH) seeks student applicants for the position of Media Assistant for the 2014-15 academic year.
The Hurford Center supports the intellectual and artistic ambitions of faculty, students, and staff. We foster collaboration, experimentation, and critical thought through a variety of seminars, symposia, working groups, arts and performance residencies, and exhibitions. Our initiatives reach beyond the local and familiar to connect with diverse communities of writers, artists, performers, thinkers, activists, and innovators.
Working with James Weissinger, the Center’s Associate Director for Media and Program Development, the Media Assistant will help publicize HCAH grants, programs, and public events to the Haverford community and beyond, focusing in particular on student outreach through social media. This is a great position for someone who loves writing, regularly takes an instagram photo of themselves instagramming, makes weird images in Photoshop on their own for fun, and has already checked their Facebook five times while reading this paragraph.
Duties may include:
- Developing and managing the Center’s Facebook page (creating events & inviting attendees; building the page’s audience)
- Helping to maintain the Center’s Twitter account
- Updating the College’s web calendar
- Writing bios on visiting scholars and artists
- Posting on the Go!Boards about Center grants and events
- Interviewing visiting scholars and artists or students, staff, and faculty involved in HCAH programs/grant recipients for the Center’s blog Decentered
- Proofreading and editing promotional copy for Hurford Center grants and events
- Assisting with Hurford Center info sessions
- Putting up posters around the Tri-Co, Mainline, and Philadelphia
- Liaising with students at other college and university humanities centers.
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Comfort using some social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vine, etc.); experience using any of these sites to organize promote events a plus
- Flexible schedule; position may involve social media work at night, on weekends, etc.
- Interest in the arts and humanities a plus (students from *all majors and years* are encouraged to apply, however)
- Graphic design skills/familiarity with Photoshop not necessary but a definite plus
- Essential: creativity, a sense of humor, and a willingness to reach out to other students about the work of the Center
