Hinterland and Heartland in China
A Faculty-Student Academic Tour of Northwest China and the Yangzi River Corridor. The CPGC invites four students (3 from Haverford and 1 from Bryn Mawr) to accompany Professor Paul Jakov Smith (History and East Asian Studies) on a four-week exploration of Northwest China and the Yangzi River Corridor, to begin May 15, 2006. The tour is worth one academic credit, and all freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who will have completed at least First-year Chinese by the start of the trip are eligible to apply. All costs (immunization, visa, round-trip airfare, in-country travel, room and board) will be paid for by the CPGC. The deadline for submission is February 27, 2006. Global Health Ministry in PA and Peru
June 5-July 28, 2006 (with possible extension), Newtown Square, PA and Chulucanas, Peru. The Global Health Ministry, headquartered in Newton Square, is a non-profit organization that since 1989 has sent teams of healthcare professionals and supporting staff to provincial villages and distressed urban areas in Latin America and the Caribbean to help people with little or no access to professional healthcare. This summer they are coordinating a primary care trip to Chulucanas, a city in northern Peru, from June 24-July 7. The intern will work in the home office in Newtown Square for the first three weeks, analyzing data from the spring trips to Haiti and Guatemala as well as assisting in final preparations for the Peru trip. High Rocks Leadership Program in West Virginia
High Rocks, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young women who live in rural West Virginia, works with junior high and high school aged girls from 3 neighboring counties through a year-long program, which includes a series of summer camps, school year tutoring, and community service. As a summer intern at HR you will be involved in all aspects of operating this organization. You will be a part of maintaining the campground and property, developing curriculum and co-teaching classes, and organizing and running fundraisers at local festivals. Through readings, discussions, and working with the girls you will learn about the history, culture, and role of women in Appalachia. This internship runs from late May through August, and housing, travel expenses, and a stipend are provided. Michigan Land Use Institute
This ten-week internship is a continuation of a collaborative project with Haverford College putting an energetic and motivated student on one of America's top environmental and land use reporting news desks. Founded in 1995 and based in a "green" office on the shores of Crystal Lake in northern MI, The Michigan Land Use Institute is one of the largest state-based land use and environmental advocacy organizations in the country. The Institute's approach in achieving progressive changes in public policy is to join probing investigative reporting and learned commentary with accomplished grassroots organizing. The intern must be excellent writer, have an interest in progressive policy making, maintain his/her composure under deadline, and get along well with colleagues. The intern will write articles for dissemination on the Web site, news services and the Institute's magazine, the Great Lakes Bulletin, and will have the opportunity to accompany staff to legislative hearings and coalition meetings throughout MI and learn first-hand how policy decisions are really made.
