The
Summer Internship Program reflects the CPGC’s commitment
to community outreach and to integrating academic learning with practical
experience. Each summer, approximately 30 - 35 Haverford students are
chosen to participate in the program, either domestically or internationally.
History
Since the summer internship program was established, the CPGC has sent
more than 70 students to work in over 30 countries, including the United
States. Interns have worked with a variety of organizations, from large
international development agencies to small community-based groups. They
have helped to address a wide array of pressing social issues, including
post-conflict peace building, transitional justice, public health, education,
gender inequality, education, fair trade, environmental degradation, sustainable
development, cultural preservation and the arts. Interns’ contributions
to their host organizations have ranged from conducting research, helping
to develop networks and fundraise, providing needed English-language skills
or instruction, and collaborating with local colleagues to help carry
out grassroots programs in communities. Many CPGC internships have resulted
in continuing relationships between Haverford students and their host
countries, with interns going on to work in international public policy,
research, education, journalism and the non-profit sector.
Integrated
Service Learning
CPGC summer internships are part of an integrated learning experience.
Those who have been awarded internships are required to participate in
a series of pre-departure orientation sessions, culminating in an off-campus
weekend to discuss health, safety and cross-cultural concerns. Upon their
return to Haverford, interns enroll in a fall semester class designed
to place social justice work in historical, cultural and political perspective.
For the Fall 2005 semester, this course, GNP 201a, “Human Rights,
Development and International Activism” will be taught by Prof.
Leslie Dwyer (CPGC Academic Liaison). Returning interns are also encouraged
to become involved in the work of the CPGC by participating in group projects,
attending public talks, sharing their experiences with the campus community
and designing their own projects for which they can apply to receive support
through the many facets of the CPGC's Programming Funds.
Details
and Eligibility
CPGC summer internships are 4-10 weeks in duration, usually scheduled
from early June until mid-August. Interns are expected to work full-time
(35-40 hours per week) for their host organizations. Interns receive an
expenses budget tailored to their specific project, plus roundtrip airfare
to their destination and all necessary vaccinations. Students on financial
aid who have a summer earnings contribution may apply to the CPGC for
additional funds to cover the earnings contribution. Students from all
majors are encouraged to apply.
Every
International Intern will be required to attend a weekend-long orientation.
This year that orientation will be held
the weekend of April 18.
