This mural in the center of the city of Matagalpa is dedicated to the Literacy Crusade. “Y Tambien Enseñeles a Leer” (And Also Teach Them to Read) was a rallying cry of the Literacy Crusade. The mural contains an image of Sandinista leader Carlos Fonseca (left) in his iconic glasses, and the logo of the Crusade of a man and a woman with books. The mural is painted on the side of a playing field dedicated to the brigadistas, or literacy teachers.
