The writing on the monument reads, “Tribute to the Literacy Teachers. 115,000 literacy teachers from all of Nicaragua from March 23 to August 23 1980 taught 406,000 Nicaraguans to read, which reduced the illiteracy rate from 50.4% to 12.9%, being worthy of the UNESCO Nadezhda K. Krupskaya prize.”
